I heard an interesting piece on the radio earlier.
83% OF IRISH PEOPLE SAY THEY’RE IN GOOD, OR VERY GOOD HEALTH
That’s pretty swell right?
Lots of healthy people in Ireland.
Lots of guys and gals who get their exercise in, who eat well, and who look after themselves.
As a personal trainer and gym owner, I should be delighted. We’re breaking thru. Our message is being spread.
But is it?
Are we actually healthy and fit, or are we just lying to ourselves?
Because when you look at the numbers, they tell a drastically different story.
53% OF IRISH ADULTS ARE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE
Look to your left, don’t even bother looking to your right. If the person to your left ain’t fat, you are.
Seriously – “overweight” is now normal. It’s now average.
BEING FAT IS NORMAL.
HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT???
That’s not healthy.
22% OF IRISH ADULTS SMOKE REGULARLY
Smoking is the direct cause of 1 in 5 deaths each year.
The life expectancy of smokers is 10 years less than those who don’t smoke.
If you quit smoking before the age of 40, it reduces your risk of dying from a smoking related illness by 90%.
90 FREAKING %.
SMOKING IS NOT HEALTHY!!
If you said you’re in good health and you smoke, you’re a liar.
Maybe you’re in pretty good shape, maybe you’re not massively overweight. But…
That’s not healthy.
25% OF IRISH ADULTS DON’T MEET THE MINIMUM DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL TARGETS
The target level is 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity each week.
Approximately 20 minutes per day.
As a nation, we are simply not healthy.
Look, I’m not trying to piss on your chips.
I’m not trying to make you feel bad.
And I’m not trying to put you down.
I just want you to be HONEST with yourself today.
Have a look back at those stats. Can you say you’re on the right side of them?
You’ve probably never thought about it before right?
Just tottered along blissfully ignorant saying “ah sure I’m grand”.
But it’s better I give you a little shock today than a cardiovascular surgeon gives you a BIG shock in 20/30 years time.
